Why Most Internet Marketers Struggle.

Share

Let’s get this straight right from the beginning.  Internet marketing is not hard.  The problem is that most aspiring internet marketers make it hard.

Most people who venture into internet marketing are focused on “ways to make money.”  They think like opportunity seekers.  As a result they jump from one opportunity to another and they never “stick” with anything long enough to build an asset that has lasting value.

The easiest way to break this vicious cycle is to start thinking like a business builder (i.e. an entrepreneur).  To do this you simply need to stop thinking about making money and start thinking about ways to add value to the marketplace.

I believe most struggling internet marketers need to make a fundamental shift in their thinking.   They need to take their focus off of making money and they need to place their focus on “creating value.”  It is the only way I know how an individual can make the transformation from struggling opportunity seeker to successful business builder.

You need to stop looking for income opportunities that promise easy money and you need to get serious about building a real business delivers value to the marketplace.

Instead of constantly asking:  “How can I make money?”. . . ask this question . . . “How can I add value to the market I want to serve?”

Make the decision on what business you want to build and then focus all of your time, energy and effort on building that one business.

Now, before you decide what business you want to build, you must answer these three extremely important questions:

  • How are you going to generate traffic?
  • How are you going to generate leads?
  • How are you going to monetize those leads?

Online business success is all about traffic, leads and monetization.  Unfortunately, most people who want to build an online business invest absolutely no time on these three vitally important activities because they are too busy researching the marketplace and jumping from one program to another in their search for an easier way to make money

They lack focus in large measure because they are not committed to building a real business.  They are not focused on adding value and solving problems.  They are thinking like “opportunity seekers.”

The bottom line is this:  the surest way to long-term success in this business is to invest the majority of your time on these three very important tasks:  generating traffic, generating leads and then monetizing those leads.

When you are focused on lead generation you are “thinking strategically”   because once you have the lead you can then market products to that lead over and over again.

With a targeted list of qualified leads you are in possession of a tangible asset.  You now have a real business that has real value.

Offline businesses are now starting to figure out the importance of lead capture.  Recently, I was at the Minneapolis St. Paul Airport and a young lady was handing out $5 gift cards for Caribou Coffee, an international coffee shop franchise based in Minneapolis.  To get the gift card all you had to do was give her your email address.

Interesting.  It’s all about lead generation.  Even successful coffee shop franchises are starting to figure this out.

Just take a look at all the super successful marketers in this business.  I’m talking about guys like Mark Ling, Frank Kern, Eben Pagan, Andy Jenkins and even old-school marketers like Dan Kennedy.  What do these super-successful marketers all have in common?  They are masters at generating leads and then monetizing those leads.

I was recently watching a video from Andy Jenkins and he talked about the number one question he gets whenever he is speaking to aspiring internet marketers.  The question, in one form or another, usually goes something this:  “So Andy, if you had to start from scratch all over again, and you had no product, no list and no name in the marketplace, what would you do?”

Andy’s response?  “GDL . . . Get Da Lead!!”

Folks, you have to get the lead and you have to build the list before you can think about monetization.  Unfortunately, most internet marketers are so excited about “making  money” that they go straight to the monetization part.  This is a huge mistake because the lead must come before monetization.

That is one of the primary differences between an opportunity seeker and a business builder.  The opportunity seeker is focused on “the money” while the business builder is focused on “the lead.”

And the marketer with the lead always wins because he (or she) can sell to that lead over and over again.
