There are a number of things that keep people from starting and building an online business, and right at the top of the list is this myth that certain markets are just too competitive. There is this belief that new marketers should stay clear of markets like fitness, health, internet marketing, Forex trading, relationship & dating, weight loss and other very popular markets because they are simply too saturated.
The problem is that too many new marketers listen to this noise and as a result they don’t act. They have thoughts of entering these very lucrative markets, but they talk themselves out of it because they hear and read things about a given market being too competitive.
I hear this all the time when I am talking to other internet marketers or reading online forums. On many, many occasions I’ve heard comments like the following: “You dont’ want go into that market — it’s way too competitive.” Or — “A new marketer should not even consider entering that market. He or she will get killed because that market is completely saturated with other marketers.”
I don’t buy it for a second. I will admit that competition is very wide — that is, there are a lot of people in popular markets like heatlh, fitness, internet marketing, Forex, relationship & dating, web hosting, etc….
However, I don’t believe the competition is deep.
My belief is that an entrepreneur can build a successful business in just about any competitive market. He (or she) just needs to stick his fork in that market and go deep (i.e. add “VALUE” to the marketplace).
There are a ton of marketers in popular markets like those mentioned above. But most people in these markets are not serious business builders. Most people in these markets are not adding a significant amount of value to the marketplace.
Just pick a market and then “Commit” yourself to this market. It’s easy. Set up a blog and then start posting content . . . .EVERY DAY!!
That one simply act of posting content every day will immediate separate yourself from at least 95% of the people in your market.
Now, do that for six months and you’ll be on your way to becoming an “Authority” in this market that most people will tell you . . . “Is just too competitive.”
If you don’t believe me I want you to subscribe to this blog, Web Business Research. And then keep an eye on it during the next few months.
I’ve had this blog for a few years , but I’ve posted very little content to it. With the recent Google Panda and Penguin updates, Google has made it known that they are going to reward websites with original content that add value to the marketplace.
Google has leveled the playing field and the black hat SEO strategies that many marketers were using to force their way onto page one of Google does not work anymore.
I saw this as a great opportunity to build an authority site in the internet marketing space.
While a lot of people are leaving search engine marketing because they can no longer manipulate Google’s search rankings, I see this as a great opportunity to build a lasting business in a market I have a great passion for.
Because of this new level playing field, I believe that today there is tremendous opportunity for search marketers in even the most competitive environments. But here is the key: you have to be willing to do the hard work and consistently add value to the market you want to serve.
As for Web Business Research (WBR), its success will not happen over night. It will take a few months, if not several months to build an audience and to build authority in this market.
But make no mistake — it will happen. It will happen because I am committed and it will happen because I am willing to do the necessary work that is required to ADD VALUE to this marketplace.
Lastly, it will happen because I have BELIEF! I’ve just started to consistently post content to WBR and I am already starting to see results . . . . and I have just begun!!
You see, I am seeing results because competition in this market is not very deep. It’s certainly wide — for there are literally tens of thousands of marketers with blogs in the internet marketing / web business marketplace. But most of them do not post content and add value to the marketplace on a consistent basis. The vast majority of bloggers in this space do not show up every day. And that is the key — you have to show up and you have to consistently add value.
I’ll say it one last time — don’t let competition scare you. Embrace markets with a lot of competition because that is where the money is flowing and that is where the buyers are located.
Embrace competition and then learn from these marketers. Study what they are doing and then do it better.
And always remember, today’s competitor is tomorrow’s JV Partner.
All the best,
Jon Poland
